The National Science Olympiad program is one of the premiere science competitions in the nation, providing rigorous, standards-based challenges to 6400 teams in 50 states. Students who are looking for a competitive experience are encouraged to join one of our teams.

The D39 Olympiad team began in 2013 and has experienced continued success with top-placing teams across a variety of events. Each year, District 39 aims to have students compete at invitational and regional competitions around the Chicago area between December and March. Qualifying teams compete at a state tournament in April.

Competitive Olympiad Program

All 7th and 8th students are invited to participate in the D39 Olympiad teams for the 2023-2024 season. D39 will be competing in Division B. Per Olympiad rules, each team of 15 students must cover and compete in all 23 of the offered Olympiad events. Students on the competition team should expect to attend practice sessions and events that extend into April. Families are responsible for arranging their own transportation to and from the practices as well as competitions (carpools are OK so long as an adult stays on-site and remains responsible for the students). We will also need parent volunteers to assist on competition days as the kids will need to prepare/practice, have snacks/lunch, and other needs that may arise. There is a competitive team member fee to cover competition fees and extra necessary resources.

Students interested in being on the 7th/8th Varsity Competition Team must complete a Science Olympiad Application. Competition students must attend ALL invitational, regional, and state (should they qualify) competitions and compete in 3-4 events per competition. They will be expected to attend team practices as well as prepare for their events and work with their team members outside of school. If the number of students interested in the 7th/8th-grade competition team exceeds 15, D39 reserves the right to incorporate a selection process. The team is expected to be comprised of WJHS students who are committed to an extended season of the Olympiad and a truly competitive experience.
